Dr. M. William Ury, Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology

B.A., Asbury College; M.Div., Asbury Theological Seminary; M.Phil., Ph.D., Drew University;

I was raised in Taiwan as the son of United Methodist missionaries, Bill and Beth Ury. I did not become a Christian until my first year of college. My B.A. degree from Asbury College in History was completed in 1978. Beginning my M. Div. degree in Israel, I studied for a year at the Institute of Holy Land Studies on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem. I received a doctorate in 1991 from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. While there, my wife Diane, and I served as associate pastors in a Chinese-American United Methodist Church in Chinatown, New York City. After graduate work I began to teach Systematic and Historical theology at Wesley Biblical Seminary where I have had the privilege of serving for over fourteen years.

I married the former Diane Nelson of Lapeer, Michigan and a graduate of Asbury College, in 1984. We have three daughters and a son, JoAnna (21) Maighdlin (19) Meredith (15) and Seth (13). Our family is a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Jackson, MS, where both I and Diane have taught Sunday School weekly, preached, and led seminars for over twenty years. We reside in Madison, Mississippi. Beyond writing various articles, I have authored two books, Trinitarian Personhood and In His Image with co-author, Dr. Allan Coppedge.

I enjoy all kinds of sports and any book or discussion that pertains to theology, philosophy, culture or biblical studies. Due to our desire to be truly Christian from a Wesleyan perspective we have found a complementary ministry to teaching in leading several accountability groups. Both I and Diane are fully committed to any and every ministry within Methodism which clearly aligns itself to the historic bases and contemporary expressions of consensual Christianity and the Wesleyan tradition. My calling and personal desire is to incorporate sound, rigorous Christian theological thinking with pastoral care and personal compassion.
